Mexico City /
Years ago, three brands competed for the lion’s share of the world’s pie. smartphone market in Mexico; in 2023 there are twelve brands that compete for the largest number of users (94 percent of the 138 million lines that exist), among the main ones are: Samsung, Motorola and Apple, but it must be considered that they focus on different niches, said the consultancy The Competitive Intelligence Unit (The CIU).
Las Other brands competing for the Mexican market of smartphones are: Xiaomi, Huawei, Oppo, Vivo, Honor, Alcatel, ZTE, Realme and Infinix.
According to the study Telecommunications in 2022 and Outlook 2023Samsung has a very vertical offer that helped it grow and position itself in Mexico as the manufacturer with the largest number of devices in operation, but lately it has focused on the premium range to compete with Apple and that is opening up more space in the medium and low range .
While, Motorola took a mid-range approach that helped it position itself and become the manufacturer that has sold the most devices in the last two years and recently began to bring its flash chips to Mexico and with that it has become very important.
Apple in Mexico has a very clear niche for its users, who usually have a complete ecosystem, with computers and tablets. Having such a high participation in a country that was predominantly low-end is a sign of its strength.
For his part, Xiaomi was the first brand to tap into the Huawei market and has managed to position itself. It has a mid-range and high-end approach that places it as one of the brands with a very important market share.
Vivo is the manufacturer that managed to sell one million units in the shortest time in the Mexican market. It is a well-established brand in Europe and in Mexico it took advantage of Huawei’s space and seems to be one of the most competitive phones, its price is approximately 25 percent lower than its main competitors.
It should be remembered that Huawei is a Chinese brand and US companies were prohibited from supplying this company with products developed or produced with US technology.
Thus, this situation relegated Huawei from the Mexican market, since in 2018 it had an ascending sales curve, but it has no longer sold the units it predicted, although maintains a significant market shareOr, because derived from the confinement due to the covid-19 pandemic, the smartphone replacement periods were extended.
Consequently, Honor is a manufacturer that begins to have a greater presence in Mexico, it seeks to acquire the percentage points that Huawei is leaving vacant.
Alcatel is a manufacturer that has managed to maintain itself in Mexico thanks to low-end and low-mid-range deviceswhile ZTE was one of the first Chinese manufacturers to arrive in the country and has maintained a stable participation, but has not been able to take advantage of the “Huawei effect”.
Realme is a Chinese manufacturer focused on mid-range and high-end devices in the country and seeks to differentiate itself from others in part with devices gamerswhile Infinix, faced with the reconfiguration scenario in Mexico, has arrived to compete for mid-range and high-end users.
