The 22-year-old Gazozs defeated the 2012 Olympic champion in London team competition Mauro Nespoli in the final with 6-4 (26:29, 28:28, 27:26, 29:29, 29:26).
This is the biggest career success for the Turk so far.
Meanwhile, South Korea, whose representatives had won all Olympic gold medals since losing in the men’s team competition in London, was left without a medal at all on Sunday.
In the fight for bronze, 36-year-old Japanese Takaharu Furukava defeated Taiwanese Chichchun Tana 7-3 (29:28, 27:29, 28:28, 29:28, 29:28).
In the quarterfinals, Tans had eliminated the last South Korean, Olympic record holder and two-time Olympic champion team, Vojin Kim, from the battle for medals, beating him 6-4.
South Korea is a superpower in this sport, winning 27 of the 45 competitions since archery returned to the game program in 1972.
The South Koreans won all disciplines for the first time at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games and had also won the first four competitions in Tokyo, with Anai Sana winning three gold medals.
“I didn’t feel the pressure because the other team members had achieved the goals we set,” Kim said after the race. “So I felt a little nervous, but I wouldn’t call it pressure. It’s too bad, but it’s nothing to be shocked about.”
This was the last archery competition in Tokyo.
