After a long illness, one of the greatest Bulgarian artists – Kliment Atanasov – died today, his relatives just announced. Atanasov left behind a huge legacy of paintings, as well as a constellation of contemporary young artists whom he trained.
He was not only a master of the brush, but also one of the best Bulgarian restorers of all time. He graduated from the Art Academy in Sofia, majoring in “Conservation and Restoration”. He has hundreds of exhibitions at home and abroad, long-time director of the “Petko Zadgorski” art gallery in Burgas.
Kliment Atanasov has restored historic churches throughout the country, including and the cathedral in Burgas “St. Cyril and Methodius”. The pinnacle of craftsmanship in his restoration work is the church “St. Teodor Tiron” in Stara Zagora, which he restored for 3 years in the authentic medieval form using the most sophisticated technology, down to the last blue detail. He is also a connoisseur of the most ancient works of art, for many years he was an expert in recognizing the finds of archaeologists in our country.
Kliment Atanasov is the founder of the “KA” gallery, which at the beginning of the Democracy was a nest of intellectuals in Burgas.
Honored by the guild of art critics, spiritual leaders in the field of esotericism, he enjoyed exceptional authority in the Masonic and Templar movement in our country.
During the last 15 years, he retired from secular life in his house in the village of Laka, Pomorie region, where he painted and restored icons and other ecclesiastical utensils almost around the clock, which could only be entrusted to a great master in his hands.

Kliment Atanasov was born in 1957 in Burgas. He left behind a huge collection of paintings, 320 of them in the last year and a half he posted every day personally on his Facebook profile. There is almost no connoisseur in Burgas whose home or office does not have a painting of the classic Kliment Atanasov.
The editorial team of Flagman.bg expresses its condolences to his wife, Nina Hristozova, who fully supported him during the last year, when his health began to deteriorate after a worsening degenerative disease.
