In Memory of Fayed: Residents Demand Security and Police Presence in Drug Trafficking-Plagued Pissevin District

A hundred residents of the Pissevin district of Nîmes gathered in memory of the young Fayed, killed on Monday by shooters involved in the war for drug trafficking.

A hundred residents of the Pissevin district, in Nîmes, gathered this Saturday in memory of a ten-year-old child, Fayed, killed Monday by shooters involved in the war for drug trafficking.

“We came here to say that what happened with the little one is not normal, that we need security”, explains one of the participants, Taoufik, 29, who prefers to keep his last name quiet.

With other men, women and children, he walked around the main square of this district where the poverty rate exceeds 70%, under gray and heavy skies.

“Another person who dies, one more in the neighborhood, it’s terrible. The neighborhood has been abandoned for years, there has to be a tragedy for people to be interested in us”, regrets his on the side of Saadja Amazian, social mediator for the Paseo association.

“It would be very important for there to be local police, a police present on a daily basis”, continues this woman who notably organizes French lessons for foreign women. “The doctors are leaving, the media library is closed, it is not only necessary to renovate the buildings, but also public services.”

“We are asking for a permanent police brigade”

A claim relayed by the representative of the Federation of Comorian associations of Nîmes, Anis Ali Ibouroi, at the origin of the call to gather.

“We say stop the violence and we ask for a permanent police brigade in the neighborhood,” he insisted, asking for “justice” for the child killed.

The family of the victim, originally from Mayotte, was not present, having left for his native island for the funeral of the child.

This Friday, Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin came to meet them in the Pissevin district, where members of the CRS8, a unit specializing in the fight against urban violence, have been deployed.

The minister had also indicated deploying a CRS company until the end of the year in the Gard.

Beyond these temporary reinforcements, Gérald Darmanin declared himself open to the request of the mayor of Nîmes to reopen a police station, bringing together municipal and national police, in this district of Pissevin, where a second homicide apparently linked to traffic took place THURSDAY. An 18-year-old man, known to the police, was shot dead at a deal point.
