Mussels with fries: they were hard to find better than in restaurant In de Parel on the Kuringersteenweg in Hasselt. For years, the iconic business was run by Alfonsina van Schaïk, later assisted by her sons Guido and Jo. Alfonsina passed away last week at the age of 89, De Smaak van de Horeca reports.
It was in 1961 that Alfonsina van Schaïk renamed the café on Kuringersteenweg In de Parel and turned it into a café-chip shop. Over the years, the business has grown into a true attraction for mussels lovers. Alfonsina kept it simple: only natural mussels were available, with a lot or little pepper as the only option… For decades, gourmets from far and wide came to De Parel for a portion of fresh mussels and fries. Even after the sons Guido and Jo joined the business from 1975, the 48 seats rarely remained unoccupied.
Because some investments were needed and there was no follow-up, the chip shop closed ten years ago. Alfonsina was 79 at the time. She later moved to the WZC Salvator, where she passed away last week. The well-known café owner and restaurant owner will be buried in Sint-Lambrechts-Herk on Wednesday at 10:30 am. With our condolences to the bereaved family.
