In May the works of the II phase of San Francisco street will begin

The Pamplona City Council will begin next month with the second phase of the San Francisco street works that will lead to the total transformation of the street with a more comfortable, friendly and accessible design since the sidewalk and road will be paved at the same height, widening the sidewalks. The design will be similar to that of the first phase. In addition, a new line of drains will be generated for the collection of rainwater and for the collection of the roof downspouts in the sanitation network.

The Local Government Board has approved the award of the works to Construcciones y Excavaciones Erriberri SL for an amount of 168,000 euros (VAT included.). The term for the execution of this work will be 2.5 months.

In this way, although San Francisco Street allows the passage of vehicles, it has been wanted to give a more pedestrian character, eliminating the architectural barriers posed by curb steps on today’s narrow sidewalks. In addition, the equality of level between the road and sidewalk homogenizes the street with the rest of the Old Town (calle Nueva, Zapatería, Mayor, Jarauta…).

The sidewalks are widened and the curb step disappears

The works of this second phase will be carried out in the section included between Eslava and Mayor streets, and will arrive after those carried out last year in the area between Campana and Eslava streets. The space will have uniformity since the urbanization criteria and materials used will be identical. Thus, the paving to be executed will be identical to that carried out on Ansoleaga, San Francisco and Jarauta streets, with the same materials and layout.

The improvement will consist of eliminating the current urbanization, which has a traditional layout. Now a much larger space of the road is allocated to the roadway than to pedestrian use, with narrow sidewalks (even 60cm) and elevated with respect to the wheeled part, which, in addition, do not comply with current accessibility regulations.

The new layout allows for the widening of current sidewalks and eliminates the curb step. The design includes a traffic lane of approximately 2.5 m that will be paved with bituminous concrete, and the rest of the space for sidewalks. These will be made with 30×20 tiles in a steel grain color and separated from the road by a white curb.

Protect the 1810 masonry mine

The works will begin with the demolition of the paving, which will be carried out with the necessary protection measures taking into account that there is a masonry mine, dating from 1810, to which the rainwater networks and downspouts in that area are derived. and that the City Council does not want to recharge with new connections. The existence of this mineta and its maintenance will again require a special delicacy in the execution of the works in the first phase, without the use of heavy machinery.

Although the drain grates in this area have been replaced more recently than on the other side of the street, they easily get stuck due to a bad connection. On the other hand, the street has the free discharge of the downpipes to the road, which generates problems with slipping.

Taking all of this into account, a new location will be given for the rainwater collection sinks, which will now be placed in the center of the street as transverse gable slopes will be executed. The building downspouts will also be collected, building a 20×20 box to facilitate cleaning, with a watertight lid. Both the drains and the downspouts will be collected in groups in different sized manholes for better operation and maintenance of networks.

No space for street furniture or plant elements

As in the current arrangement, spaces for parking or other services such as containers will not be marked as it is a very narrow street. This lack of space will not allow the placement of railings or other elements of urban furniture or plant elements such as planters or flower beds.

The works will be carried out in coordination with the necessary trench for the rehabilitation of the Salesas building, in which the Commonwealth of the Pamplona Region is currently working. In fact, until that trench is resolved, redevelopment works cannot begin.
