In Marseille, the long fight of residents saves a park from concrete – France Bleu

Almost ten years after the launch of the project, it seems buried. By dint of militant picnics, petitions, appeals to the courts… united residents saved their green lung in the 8th arrondissement of Marseille, on the edge of the Huveaune near Parc Borély.

The former majority of Jean-Claude Gaudin had delivered a building permit for a high standard building of 4 floors and 24 housing units including five duplex villas which not only concreted part of the park but took over an entire kindergarten from a social residence. The new left-wing majority let the building permit expire at midnight, on the night of Monday to Tuesday, it refused to extend it. “Build a building in a park in Marseille, never! NEVER!” insists Marie-Jo Payen at the head of the revolt since 2019.

“An ecocidal and anti-social project”

Marie-Jo Payen is the president of the association of friends of Parc Henri Fabre. His apartment overlooks the charming little park which is full of birds, hedgehogs and squirrels, “a refuge near the Huveaune”. “It was an ecocide and anti-social project. Concrete is enough! Marseille, green city. And taking a kindergarten to build high-end buildings for wealthy Parisians is a no-no!” With passion and determination, Marie-Jo led this long fight, on the front line. Initially, there were only two of them. Today they are one thirty local residents who never gave up.

Make the plot unconstructible

Every summer, global warming dries up Marseille and these islands of greenery are vital. “Cutting down trees is an aberration. Today more than ever! You don’t have to be a great scientist to understand that nature must be preserved. A building is a heat island.”

Henri Fabre saves his plant treasure. “Relief after years of anguish”, “a victory”... but after ? The association wants to make the land unconstructible as part of a revision of the PLUI. And the good news is that the town hall supports this request. “We will be at peace and so will future generations.”
