In Marseille, Monoprix decided to experiment with locked chocolate bars. The distributor closely monitors the evolution of shoplifting figures.
In a locked plastic case, a simple chocolate bar. These anti-theft devices have been in place for several days in a Monoprix supermarket in Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône). These safety features are usually reserved for more expensive products, which surprises customers. “We may need to consider another solution than putting anti-theft devices on food products”suggests a customer. “The anti-theft device is worth more than the value of the product, it’s inconsistent”underlines a man.
Monoprix is carrying out a test in just one of its stores, which is experiencing an increase in theft of chocolate bars, a loss estimated at 500 euros per month. Similar initiatives have been implemented abroad, such as anti-theft alarms on cheese or butter in England, and laundry detergent containers protected by chains in the United States. “It reflects two things: the development of theft in general in commerce, and the development of temptations”explains Olivier Dauvers, consumption expert. In France, shoplifting increased by 14% in 2022.
