In map: municipalities with the lowest vaccination coverage are in Brussels

Brussels wants to pull out all the stops to achieve a vaccination rate of 70 percent by mid-July. But the gap with Flanders is large, a glance at the vaccination map shows. Some Brussels municipalities have the lowest scores in the country.

The vaccination campaign in our capital is slowing down, that much is clear. Last week, 62,000 vaccines were administered in the Brussels Region, of which almost 29,000 were first doses. However, at least 50,000 first shots have to be taken every week to reach the 70 percent mark of all adult Brussels residents by mid-July.

With nocturnes – where DJs brighten up the vaccination center -, mobile vaccination teams and even a vaccination bus region to boost vaccination coverage. But the 70 percent ambition may gradually be put away. 56 percent of the Brussels population is (partially) vaccinated. By next week that will be about 60 percent.

A map of Belgium shows how big the Brussels backlog is. The region is a light-colored island in a sea of blue. The darker the color, the greater the percentage of adults who received a first vaccine shot. The Belgian municipalities with the lowest vaccination coverage are located in the north and west of Brussels.

At the bottom dangle Forest (56%), Saint-Gilles (52%), Schaerbeek (51%), Brussels (50%), Koekelberg (50%), Anderlecht (50%), Saint-Josse-ten-Node (46% ) and Molenbeek (46%). Less than half of the adult residents are willing to have a corona jab.

By way of comparison: In Flanders, 70 percent of the population has received a first shot and the number of people on the Qvax reserve list is shrinking visibly. The stars are the West Flemish Lichtervelde and Hooglede and the Antwerp Vorselaar, where 90 percent of the adults have already been pricked at least once.

Inge Neven, the head of the Brussels health inspectorate, is not surprised by the scores in many Brussels municipalities. ‘The low vaccination rate is due to the different cultural backgrounds and the low socio-economic situation. Moreover, Brussels has a young population. Most young people are difficult to convince, because they know that they don’t get that sick from a corona infection. For them, the added value of a vaccination is not that great, they think.’

The socio-economic context also explains the difference between the northern municipalities, such as Molenbeek and Anderlecht, and the southern municipalities, such as Sint-Pieters-Woluwe, Uccle and Watermael-Boitsfort. ‘In those first areas you will find the poorer and large families, who hardly make use of preventive health care and are at a digital disadvantage. It is difficult to reach those people’, admits Neven.

Vaccination antenna

Nevertheless, the Brussels Region wants to do everything it can to give them a shot. Neven gives the example of Sint-Joost-ten-Node, where a so-called ‘vaccination antenna’ was set up. ‘Confidential persons enter into discussions with certain population groups who do not want a vaccine, because they are under the spell of conspiracy theories. We answer their questions, provide correct information and guide them to a vaccination center. These local campaigns provide us with a hundred extra vaccinates every week. Every little bit counts.’

If you make the comparison with other (large) cities, we should certainly not be ashamed.

Neven refutes the image that Brussels is the black sheep of the vaccination campaign. ‘If you make a comparison with other (large) cities, we should certainly not be ashamed’, says Neven, who points out that the vaccination rate is just as high as in Charleroi and La Louvière. In terms of vaccination, Brussels scores even better than New York, Manchester and Paris. ‘We will never achieve percentages like in Flanders, but we will continue to do everything we can. Our actions and initiatives are not wasted.’
