In Lyon, volunteers roam the banks of the Rhône to collect and recycle waste

The association “Wings of the Ocean” organized, Sunday, February 7, a major operation to clean the banks of the Rhône in Lyon to educate residents about respecting the environment, and to remove some of the pollution from the city center. 376 kilos were recovered.

In Lyon, with gloves, large bags and pliers, a hundred volunteers from the association “Wings of the Ocean“launched a major operation to clean the banks of the Rhône, Sunday, February 7, at the Tête d’Or park. In the end, 376 kilos of waste were collected by the activists.

“It’s a great cause”

It’s nice that there are people“declares straight away, a little surprised by this success, Tyana Haider, president of the Lyon branch of the association which was born two and a half years ago:”it’s really the biggest clean-up that we’ve been able to do since the start in Lyon. At the beginning there were about ten of us. There we exceed 80!

For Mina, volunteer of the day: “I think it’s important, it’s a great cause to clean up a little bit, to pick up waste. There will always be some, but it’s good to do it. It is colossal the number of garbage that we find.

A first sorting is organized on site, to know precisely what waste is collected and in what quantity. The community will then take care of recovering everything, via the site of the Metropolis Toodego, accessible to all, which makes it possible to indicate in particular a deposit of waste in the street.

“Lots of plastic bottles”

Young President Tyana Haider wants to prevent the accumulation of plastic in the oceans at the source: “The earlier you can stop the massacre, the better. It seems essential to me to collect waste, mainly plastic. Every stream will flow directly into the seas and oceans.

Isabelle, a very motivated volunteer, “found a lot of plastic bottles. I found nails, a vial of dangerous and toxic products, a few cigarette ends, papers, glass bottles, and all kinds of objects.”

Clean up oceans and rivers

On November 22, 40 volunteers had collected 200 kg of garbage, over a larger area, but still in the same neighborhood. Then on January 9, a dozen volunteers picked up 120 kg over a small area 10 meters long.

The primary mission of the association is to clean up the oceans and rivers: “Our main mission is to remove plastic from the sea and from the beaches. We go to polluted and hard-to-reach areas to collect the plastic and then recycle it on land. 10 rivers send 800,000 tonnes of plastic into the oceans each year. Our long-term project is to deploy a fleet of recovery vessels at the mouths of these rivers, to collect plastic and recycle it.“explains the association.

With the heavy rains of recent weeks, the Rhône and the Saône are overflowing, carrying all kinds of plant waste and sometimes huge tree trunks, but the association already has its work cut out for it with the more urban pollution. along the quays …
