In Lyon, the decree which prohibits air-conditioned businesses from leaving their doors open is not respected

On the rue de la République in Lyon (Rhône), the doors of many large retailers are still open and the coolness of the air conditioning units running inside is perceptible on the thresholds of the stores. It’s hard to believe that a decree was issued by the city of Lyon on July 19, prohibiting the use of these open door air conditioners in “commercial establishments”.

Inside, several employees indicate that they are unaware of, or comply with the directives of their management. However, the decree has been in force since July 20. “The heat wave and the war in Ukraine reminded us that we are vulnerable to climate change and the scarcity of energy resources and that we must reduce our energy consumption,” explains Camille Augey, the assistant in charge of trade.

“The goal is to raise awareness”

If the decree indicates that non-compliance with the provisions “will be liable to verbalization and prosecution in accordance with the law in force”, in fact, it is difficult to find a legislative text on the subject. “The objective is to raise awareness and to educate, not to punish”, procrastinates Camille Augey.

As for traders, Clément Chevalier, director of My Presqu’Île, confides that this decree was experienced “half fig half grape” by the profession. “If we understand that this is common sense, should we go as far as this decree? Some freelancers were also surprised by the tone of the text even if everyone understands that an effort must be made… and even though it is traditional to think that leaving the door open makes the store more welcoming”, concludes- he.

A similar decree was issued in Paris on Tuesday, as we revealed.
