A supportive third place, basketball hoops in parks and playgrounds, a crèche, a municipal oven in Villeurbanne. And in Lyon, greenery at Place Bellecour, solidarity lockers for the homeless, street art, public toilets and many other sports routes in the parks. The two largest cities of the Lyon metropolis have just unveiled the projects selected as part of their participatory budgets. The former for the capital of Gaul and the latter for its neighbour.
“The implementation of the participatory budget is an important commitment of our mandate plan. Enabling citizens to take charge of their city’s destiny and contribute to its transformation is democratic progress,” says Mayor Grégory Doucet. In Villeurbanne, Cédric Van Styvendael believes that participatory budgeting is a reflection of “the way mayonnaise is taken between the responsibility that is ours as elected officials to implement public policies and also our ability to integrate ideas from the field into our program”.
