“It’s not always easy to push open the door of a police station. So it’s up to us to make sure that this goes as well as possible ”. With his teams, Patrick Leseur, the deputy central commissioner, targeted a weakness in the Lorient police station. With its cramped hall and about fifty people received each day, the place does not really lend itself to confidentiality. And for some cases, this is problematic. “We found that discretion was not satisfactory. It is not pleasant to have to reveal your private life in front of other people ”, continues the Commissioner.
Blue for the classic, orange for the sensitive
To remedy this, the Lorient police have decided to draw inspiration from a system in place at the Le Mans police station. It is a simple color code. When entering, the visitor chooses between blue if he wants to denounce classic facts (theft, damage, fraud, assault on public roads, noise, neighborhood problem, etc.) and orange for offenses requiring enhanced confidentiality. In particular domestic or family violence, but also sexual assault.
“The person is then directed to a dedicated place where they are taken care of by a senior officer. This avoids having multiple interlocutors and this enhances listening comfort, ”assures Patrick Leseur. This differentiated reception was launched on January 28 in Lorient. And it already seems to give satisfaction. “The first feedback is positive. Including on the side of security assistants and administrative staff responsible for reception. Their mission is complicated, ”insists the commissioner.
Intra-family violence explodes
The police no longer want the lack of discretion to be a brake for the victims. In particular for domestic violence in full explosion in France. The Lorient police station is no exception. With confinement, the facts of general delinquency are down sharply (less 20% for example in January compared to last year). On the other hand, domestic violence continues to increase. “They have more than doubled in certain sectors of our zone”, confides Commissioner Leseur. The police see it as a “confinement effect” but also a liberated word that must not be disturbed.
