“Unfortunately, the centre’s research, which has lasted for more than a year, has resulted in inadequate, unbalanced evaluations, so the centre’s new management has decided to remove the study from the site,” Jakubausks, who was appointed director general last summer, told a news conference.
“It has been there for three years, and it is enough time to get acquainted, but the KGB document itself is available to everyone in the Special Archive,” Jakubauskas said. After the press conference, he confirmed to the news agency BNS that the registration journal of KGB agents and informants would be removed from the website www.kgbveikla.lt. “We will remove the journal. Because this journal, compiled by the Soviet [Valsts] security [komiteja], each is available in the Special Archives, “said Jakubausks.
The Center for the Study of Genocide and Resistance Movement of the Population started publishing the list of the Lithuanian population recruited by the KGB in 2012, but the publication was completed in 2018. The publication analyzes data on 1669 persons.
The Center has indicated that the logbook should be evaluated critically – all the agents on the list have been recruited by the KGB or other security bodies, but not everyone wanted to cooperate, moreover, not all agents should be evaluated equally. The magazine is not a secret document, it is freely available. According to the Lustration Law, only the names of persons who have acknowledged their cooperation are not made public. There are 22 such individuals in this magazine.
When the cases of agents and informants were made public, the fact that the KGB had also recruited many well-known people caused a wide resonance in Lithuania. Analyzing the available KGB materials, the researchers concluded that about 118,000 people could be recruited in Lithuania.
