In less than a week, two swans trapped in fishing nets on the Loiret

It came close to it.

On his Facebook page, the Apus Apuces association, Loiret wildlife care center, recounts, on May 28, the misfortunes of a swan.

“A fishing line with a hook wrapped around its paw: a mute swan was in distress on the Loiret, in the middle of the river. We immediately asked the firefighters for help, and they immediately intervened. “

This approved center, created in 2009, which picks up and cares for wild animals in distress, injured or sick with the aim of being able to reintegrate them into their natural environment, welcomes “the beautiful coordination of the firefighters of Orléans ‍and the river brigade which made it possible to free the bird”.

“So many adventures for this swan which, after having been freed from its shackles, was able to leave safe and sound to find your own “, still writes the association on Facebook.

01/24/2020: In Olivet, the battle continues around the Loiret river, whose bed is threatened by tons of silt and sand

The mother saved … not her baby

A rescue that echoes another fine gesture that took place a few days earlier, on the Loiret once again.

Indeed, the association Apus Apuces says that on May 23 in the morning, a resident of Olivet discovered “a mother swan in distress, difficult to approach, who was trapped, with her young, in a fishing line wrapped around her leg and her wing”.

The association went there and, with the help of Olivetaine who had given the alert, was able to help the trapped birds: “We approached the mother with a boat to avoid hurting her. too scared. This one was able to be released from the wire. Unfortunately, the little one, trapped underwater, did not survive drowning … The mother swan found her other cubs and came back to the pontoon as if to thank us. “

This kind of situation unfortunately occurs beyond the Loiret river. The Republic of the Center has, for example, already reported the rescue of an animal by firefighters on the Loire. One hook in the leg, the other in the beak, the swan was trapped in a fishing line stuck in stones.

Cases in the shovel

Loïc, volunteer of the Apus Apuces association confirms that in “99% of cases of injured swans, fishing lines or hooks are involved”. He explains, “The swans dive to collect their food and that’s where they get tangled up.” He deplores this “form of pollution” generated by fishermen, but admits: “I can hardly see a fisherman who breaks his line in the Loire going to retrieve it …”

The volunteer has also just been alerted, this Saturday, for an umpteenth case, in Châtenoy, in the Gâtinais. Warned in the morning, he can only go there in the afternoon: “We’re called out all the time. We’re overwhelmed.”

If you find an injured wild animal, the Loiret Wildlife Care Center advises you to contact it as soon as possible at 06.77.81.11.22 or 02.38.39.36.41.
