In Latvia, mortality with Covid-19 is seven times higher than the EU average

At the end of last week, mortality in Latvia with a diagnosis of Covid-19 was almost seven times higher than the average in the European Union (EU) and the European Economic Area (EEA), according to data compiled by the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC).


In the last two weeks from 1 to 14 November, the mortality rate with diagnosed Covid-19 in Latvia has slightly decreased to 268.6 cases per million population, however, for the second week in a row, Latvia is in the third place among the 30 EU / EEA countries with the highest mortality. .

Bulgaria is in first place with 327 deaths, followed by Romania with 268.6 deaths per million in the previous two weeks.

Meanwhile, the average mortality rate diagnosed with Covid-19 in the EU and EEA countries at that time was 40 cases per million population.

Among Latvia’s neighbors, the mortality rate has fallen in Lithuania. There, the death rate in the previous two weeks was 69.1 cases per million population, and Lithuania ranks eighth among the EU / EEA countries.

In Estonia, on the other hand, the number of deaths has risen to 112.9 per million, and Estonia currently ranks sixth among EU / EEA countries in terms of mortality from being diagnosed with Covid-19.

Latvia’s workload with Covid-19 patients has also decreased, but the country is still in second place in the EU / EEA. Last week, from 8 to 14 November, the rate of patients hospitalized with Covid-19 in Latvia was 62.8 per 100,000 population.

Bulgaria still has a higher hospitalization rate, followed by Lithuania with 62.1 hospitalizations per 100,000 population per week. In Estonia, the figure is 41.4 cases.

The average hospitalization rate for Covid-19 patients in the EU / EEA is 16.7 cases per 100,000 population. Court ECDC does not have data on five European countries

Meanwhile, the Baltic states have managed to reduce the overall incidence of Covid-19 in the past two weeks. At the end of last week, the highest incidence in the EU / EEA countries was recorded in Slovenia – 2044.2 cases per 100,000 population. Followed by Slovakia, Austria and Croatia.

Estonia is in fifth place with 1296.1, Lithuania in seventh with 1213.8, and Latvia in eighth with 1111.4 infections per 100,000 population.

During this week, the situation in the Baltic States continues to improve, and the incidence is falling in all three Baltic States.

The average incidence rate in the EU and EEA countries in the last two weeks is 478.3 cases per 100,000 population.

However, Latvia ranks third in Europe in terms of the number of seniors. In the last two weeks from 1 to 14 November in Latvia, the infection rate among the population aged 65 and over reached 861 cases per 100,000 population.
