In Latvia, minors are still regularly involved in marriage

Throughout Europe, including Latvia, the age at which people get married is increasing every year. The time when young people rushed to get ready for the wedding right after graduating from high school seems to have passed. However, as the portal 1188.lv was informed by the Birth Registry Department of the Ministry of Justice – in 2022, 22 persons who had not even reached the age of majority got married.

Minors may marry only with parental permission

Latvian legislation stipulates that a minor may enter into a contract marriage only with an adult. It should also be noted that a minor may marry only with the permission of his parents or official guardians. The minimum age for marriage is 16 years.
