In Komi, two children fell ill with HIV

On December 6, the regional conference “Implementation of measures to counter the spread of HIV infection in Komi” was held in the capital of Komi. A journalist from the portal “About the City of Syktyvkar” attended the conference.

The event on combating the spread of HIV infection was opened by the head of the medical care organization department, Irina Kondratyeva. She noted that new cases of the disease have begun to be detected more often in Komi.

“I can say that the situation is not highly stable if there are new cases of the disease. When HIV infection spreads, sexual transmission predominates. All conditions have now been created for the diagnosis of infection and the availability of therapy. We must identify practices so that people with HIV do not feel limited in their opportunities compared to other people,” said the head of the medical care organization department.

After this, the head of the Republican Center for the Prevention and Control of AIDS and Infectious Diseases, Ekaterina Zhiglova, presented her report. Earlier, she commented on the morbidity situation in Komi to journalists.

As part of the report, Ekaterina Zhiglova announced that in Komi the incidence of HIV infection is lower than in Russia, but an increase in incidence is visible. Moreover, this growth occurs primarily at the expense of the civilian population.

It also became known that in 2022, two children in Komi became infected with HIV. In both cases, the disease was transmitted from the mother. Currently, in the region, 21 minors are registered for HIV infection. For 2022, the incidence rate in the anti-rating for the regions of the republic is as follows: Syktyvdinsky district, Ukhta, Knyazhpogostsky district, Vorkuta and Syktyvkar.

“There has been a year-over-year decline in the clinical manifestations of the population; the sexual partners of pregnant women are poorly examined. There are some organizations whose hospitals do not test for HIV. Everyone who was hospitalized must be tested for HIV,” said the head of the center.

Ekaterina Zhiglova added that in 2023 the situation has worsened. First of all, the numbers rose due to a decrease in the number of residents in Komi. The main age of those who have HIV infection ranges from 30 to 49 years. The mortality rate from HIV also increased – 25.4%. 75% of patients acquired HIV infection as a result of unprotected sexual intercourse. Previously, the parenteral route of infection predominated in Komi. Now it is 21.5%.
