Protests in Khabarovsk have not stopped since July 9, but this Saturday, in addition to demands for the release of Furgala, some 8,000 people took to the streets to demand the trial of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

In this demonstration, in addition to the posters calling for “freedom for Furgal,” there were also posters with slogans such as “Putin’s gang in court!” and “Putin kidnapped our governor.”

Meanwhile, authorities say only less than a thousand protesters have taken to the streets this Saturday.

The van was arrested on July 9 and taken to Moscow, where he was interrogated and held in pre-trial detention. On Thursday, the detention was extended until December 9.
The committee of inquiry alleges that Furgals organized the murders of two businessmen in 2004 and 2005. He is also charged with attempted murder.

Furgals himself, who represents the Liberal Democratic Party led by Vladimir Zhirinovsky, has categorically denied the allegations against him.

Furgals became the governor of the Khabarovsk region in 2018, but until then he was a deputy of the State Duma.

In the gubernatorial election, Liberal Democrat Furgals defeated the ruling party’s United Russia candidate with about 70% of the vote, and commentators explained it as a protest vote over growing dissatisfaction with President Vladimir Putin’s policy results.

His supporters say the allegations against Furgal are politically motivated.
