Currently, the manual transmission is available for almost half of VW models. It is planned to phase out all manual transmissions by 2030, when internal combustion engines will also be phased out and a complete switch to electric-only new cars.
Although electrification will inevitably eliminate the need for a manual transmission from the offer, the timely phasing out of its installation will save VW money on new models. In most cases, the manual transmission on the new models will be replaced by an automatic DSG, but it is possible that in some markets the classic “automatic” with a hydraulic transformer will be offered instead.
JATO analysts estimate that a total of 5,838 different versions of passenger cars are offered by carmakers in the German market, while the manual transmission is only offered for 1,870 modifications, which is only about a third of all new cars available on the market. So far, VW is one of the most loyal to this classic technology – 139 of the 353 car versions it offers are available with a manual transmission.
It should be noted that the abandonment of the manual transmission applies directly to passenger cars, as the option of the manual transmission in VW commercial vehicles could be maintained beyond 2030.
The abandonment of the manual transmission is a general trend in the automotive industry, affecting a wide range of segments – from budget models to luxury sports cars. Last year, Mercedes-Benz announced the abandonment of the manual transmission option, but next year Aston Martin will follow suit. Ferrari and Lamborghini, on the other hand, do not already offer any modifications with a manual transmission, so classic modifications with such a transmission even increase in price among collectors.
