In Japan, the Mega Drive controller is released for the Switch with 6 buttons

Nintendo thinks the Japanese are worth more buttons than us.

Nintendo announced during its latest Direct that they will release Sega Mega Drive games and N64 games for Switch. In order for us to get a genuine gaming feeling, wireless hand controls are also released from the classic consoles together with the games. These will be available for purchase through Nintendo’s online store for all online members. For Mega Drive (or Genesis as it was called in other parts of the world) there were two types of hand controls, one with three buttons and one with six buttons. Unfortunately, we in the western world are only allowed to take part in it with three buttons when it is released for the Switch, while the Japanese will get the six-button version.

A spokesman for Nintendo wrote about the election:

“For the U.S. and Canada, a replica of the original SEGA Genesis controller is the available model. This was by far the more widely used and well-known Sega Genesis controller in these regions.”

Now he certainly does not say anything about Europe, but given that we also mainly had the three-button model, the guess is that we will be included in this decision. It is also not the first time we in the West have been blown on buttons. When Sega launched its Sega Genesis mini in 2019, it was released with six buttons in Japan, while in the west we had to settle for three buttons.
