In Italy, it was forbidden to pay in cash for purchases more expensive than 1000 euros

From the beginning of next year, it will be possible to pay in cash in the amount of 999 euros inclusive. This applies to such operations:

  • money transfers to individuals and legal entities (also purchases in stores);
  • currency exchange;
  • loans and donations, even if cash flows between family members;
  • transfers of securities to bearer in euros or in foreign currencies carried out for any reason between different entities.

An exception was introduced for cashing money from a card or depositing cash into a bank account.

At the same time, shopkeepers and other entrepreneurs in Italy will be required to accept cards for purchases of any amount. Otherwise, the seller faces a fine of 30 euros plus a percentage of the purchase price.

They note that until 2020, the limit on cash payments in Italy was 3,000 euros. But the limit of 1000 euros was in effect six years ago. However, then it was canceled, and the limit was raised.
