Indonesia urged to Take Early Action Against human Metapneumovirus (HMPV)
Jakarta, 23/01/2025 — In a recent statement, Kurniasih Mufidayati, a member of Commission IX of the DPR RI from the PKS Fraction, called on the Ministry of Health to implement anticipatory measures to curb the potential spread of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in Indonesia.while the virus is not considered as severe as COVID-19, Kurniasih emphasized the need for vigilance to prevent widespread transmission.
“HMPV is not a new virus. This virus was discovered in the Netherlands in 2001 and has a transmission pattern similar to COVID-19, namely through droplets or contaminated surfaces. Even tho it is not as perilous as COVID-19, early anticipation must still be carried out to prevent wider spread in Indonesia,” Kurniasih stated on Friday, 17/01/2025.
The call to action comes as Indonesia faces the challenge of managing the virus, which has already been detected in the country. Kurniasih stressed the importance of learning from the COVID-19 pandemic to address the potential spread of HMPV effectively. She urged the Ministry of Health to enhance monitoring and prepare mitigation strategies promptly.
“We invite the Ministry of Health to increase vigilance, carry out complete monitoring of cases, and prepare mitigation measures from the start. The revelation of HMPV cases in Indonesia must be a warning so that we are not too late in responding,” she added.
Kurniasih also highlighted the role of the public in preventing the spread of the virus. She encouraged individuals to maintain their health and strengthen their immune systems, particularly vulnerable groups such as infants and the elderly.“With a strong immune system, the HMPV virus can be controlled. I especially remind vulnerable groups, such as babies and the elderly, to get extra attention. Families also need to pay attention to Clean and Healthy Living Behavior (PHBS) because prevention is always better than cure,” she said.
despite Commission IX of the DPR RI currently being in recess,Kurniasih confirmed that informal communication with the Ministry of Health continues. She also announced that the commission would formally discuss the issue during its upcoming session, which begins on January 21.
“We will seriously monitor the development of this disease. In the near future, we will hold a meeting with the Ministry of Health to ensure strategic steps in dealing with HMPV,” she concluded.Key Points on HMPV
