Within hours, the blaze swept across an area of 647.5 hectares and destroyed more than 500 homes, Joe Pelle said at a press briefing.
The sheriff said an entire subdivision of 370 homes had gone up in flames west of Superior, and 210 homes were lost in the Old Town neighborhood of Superior, along with other residences in the area. The material losses also include a shopping center and a hotel in Superior.
