On April 1st, the Ieva Simonaitytė Memorial Museum, a branch of the Gargžda Region Museum, announces a family weekend and invites you to participate in the theatrical educational program prepared by the Children’s Literature Museum – the fairy tale SPIDER WEDDING in a suitcase.
Celebrating International Children’s Book Day
April 2 is not only the birthday of the Danish storyteller Hans Christian Andersen, but also the International Children’s Book Day, which was called to be celebrated by Jella Lepman in 1967, who wrote an open letter to the readers of the world.
Since then, letters to readers on the occasion of International Children’s Book Day have been written by the world’s most famous children’s writers: Astrida Lindgren, Meindert DeJong, Katherine Paterson, Cristine Nöstlinger and others. The 2019 International Children’s Book Day poster and text was created by Kęstutis Kasparavičius, illustrator and author of children’s books.
This year’s letter was created by prominent Greek writer Vagelis Iliopoulos and the poster was illustrated by Photini Stephanidi. Together, they invite you to celebrate the power of the children’s book, promoting the values of equality, diversity and inclusion, as well as building human connections through tolerance and understanding. The theme of this appeal is “I am a book, read me”.

We may look quite different:
some big, some small,
some black and white, some colorful,
some have hundreds of pages, others only a few.
Family weekend at the museum
Therefore, the Ieva Simonaitytė Memorial Museum in Priekulė declares a fun day of laughter – April 1st – as a family weekend and invites families with children to visit.
On Saturday at 2 p.m., only children who are starting or learning to read, who like or want to spend more time with books, with their mothers and fathers are welcome.
Ieva Simonaitytė has said “I owe my children. I didn’t create enough for them…“. Therefore, in commemoration of the International Children’s Book Day, the writer’s memorial museum invited another museum as a guest. Educators from the Children’s Literature Museum who came from Kaunas will organize the out-of-town education on the veranda of writer Ieva Simonaitytė’s summer house.
A fairy tale arrives in Priekulė in a suitcase
Not only the fairy tale, but the entire theater can fit in a suitcase! There is no need for a stage or a backstage – the suitcase opens with scenography installed on the walls, the glove puppets – the characters – are placed on the children’s hands, all that remains is to distribute the words and choose the narrator who reads the most clearly.
After opening the suitcase together with the educators of the Children’s Literature Museum from Kaunas, the children will take out characters from poems and fairy tales, other theatrical props and create a poem play! Before that, you will get acquainted with the most important theater terms – stage, backstage, scenography, director, actor, rehearsal.
THE SPIDER’S WEDDING is a humorous poem by Justin Marcinkevičius, which tells the story of the evil spider Tabalai, who wanted very much to kidnap and marry the sun. The fun production features many characters – various birds, beetles and other moody woodland creatures who become important characters at the wedding.
This theatrical game will involve everyone present in a fun adventure. When you come to the event dedicated to the International Children’s Book Day, you will be able to get to know the participants of the spider wedding, hear recommendations of children’s literature and have a great and creative time!
