It’s been 20 years since the release of Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines, a cult first-person role-playing game set in the grim universe of the World of Darkness. Developed by the now closed studio Troika Games, the game was created by the legendary developers of the first two Fallout and Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura: Tim Kane, Leonard Boyarsky and Jason Anderson.
Developing the game was a difficult process. Due to constant delays, the game exceeded its budget, and the publisher Activision finally requested that it be released, despite the defects. This left the developers with only a few weeks for testing.
The result was expected – VtM – Bloodlines was a masterpiece and a technical disaster. Its plot, character development and dialogue received high marks, but many bugs overshadowed the game’s experience. Despite positive reviews from critics, sales were disappointing. This led to the closure of Troika Games in February 2005.
However, over the years, the game has become a true cult phenomenon, prompting the development of a sequel. However, Bloodlines 2, which also has many problems, is not expected until the first half of 2025. All textures and models in the player’s apartment and nearby apartments have been created from scratch. Almost all props were reworked, although some models started showing errors before release.
Materials and emissive lights:
Game textures that use alpha to distort light are converted to emissive maps. Objects that should glow now emit light, albeit with some unexpected effects.
High poly models and textures:
Texture Designer and Tool Bag 4/5 were used to render the textures, which greatly improved the surface quality.
Despite the work done, the mod only covers a small part of the game, and bugs are still an essential part – as a tribute to the traditions of the first one. However, this does not stop fans who are ready to return to the world of Los Angeles World of Darkness in a new and improved form.
