The campaign team of the US presidential candidate Joe Biden has presented Biden’s vision for US-Baltic relations, according to which he promises strong support for the region during his presidency, the Estonian public broadcaster ERR’s Internet news portal reported.
The document emphasizes that Biden was a representative of the Barack Obama administration on the security of the Baltic States.
Biden’s vision also includes a strong message to Russia not to try to intimidate any NATO country.
“Joe Biden’s continued support for the Baltic states and his belief in America’s commitment to our allies contrasts sharply with Donald Trump, who has questioned the value of the NATO alliance,” the document said.
“Joe Biden will steadfastly support our NATO allies, unlike President Trump, who has questioned the value of the alliance and once confused the Baltics with the Balkans,” the document said.
Biden also promises to continue the European Detention Initiative (EDI), which pays for the deployment of US and NATO troops in the Baltic States to deter Russia from invading.
“He will not rob this fund to pay for the border with Mexico, as President Trump did, by transferring $ 770 million from the initiative to funds already allocated,” the document said.
Biden’s team has said it will continue Washington’s opposition to the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, which Biden says will increase Europe’s dependence on Russian gas and subject Europe to Russian blackmail.
