In half of Italy the medical departments are saturated

Italian hospitals are suffering everywhere but a report by the Agency for Regional Health Services (Agenas), updated to 6 November, puts in paper the particularly delicate situations.

There are 10 regions with departments of pulmonology, general medicine and infectious diseases saturated with respect to the threshold limit of 40%: Emilia Romagna (45%), Lazio (44%), Liguria (70%), Lombardy (69%) Marche (47%), Piedmont (93%), Bolzano (98%), Trento (44%), Umbria (49%), Valle d’Aosta (89%). While for intensive care the threshold value of 30% is exceeded by 10 regions (Emilia Romagna, Liguria, Lombardy, Marche, Piedmont, Bolzano, Trento, Tuscany, Umbria, Valle d’Aosta).

Three more than yesterday, demonstrating that unfortunately the emergency changes day by day.

Ranieri Guerra, deputy director of the World Health Organization (WHO), and Walter Ricciardi, advisor to the Minister of Health Roberto Speranza, sound the alarm.

THE EXPERTS – “The alarming figure – affirms Ranieri Guerra – is that of ordinary hospitalizations, which is saturating the internal medicine departments of half of Italy. This is a fact on which it is absolutely fundamental to reflect, because it represents the suffering of the territory and the fact that the first line is crossed “. Ricciardi, professor of hygiene at the Catholic University of Rome, echoes him. “The situation of the hospitals is dramatic more or less throughout Italy, in some cases it is even tragic. We are no longer able to hospitalize patients, those who arrive at the hospital are once again the serious or very serious ones and many have to stay at home” . And “with the capacity of beds that we have, we are able to absorb only Covid patients while all the others with other diseases are unable to cure them or treat them badly, so the system collapses”.

THE STOP – According to the new report of the High School of Economics and Management of Health Systems (Altems) of the Catholic University, there are already at least 4 regions that have opted for a complete suspension of admissions of all priority classes: Lombardy, Puglia, Calabria and Campania, while Abruzzo has approved its suspension within 60 days. And the outpatient activity is also beginning to suffer repercussions: Campania has already approved the suspension of all activities except urgent ones, while Calabria has suspended those that can be deferred and scheduled. The remaining regions have not officially issued any acts relating to any suspension of outpatient services or hospitalizations, but this does not exclude that they are not doing it.

THE FIRST PHASE – However, the situation remains better than in the first phase of the emergency, according to the data of the extraordinary Commissioner for the Arcuri emergency. Comparing those of yesterday, November 5, with those of March 21, the hospitalized with symptoms have gone from 41% of the infected to the current 4.9%, in intensive care before there were 6.7% of Covid patients , today we are at 0.5%. While in home isolation they are now about 94% of the positives compared to 51.8% on 21 March.
