In Gulbene region, the anniversaries of “Skroderdienas” are celebrated with outdoor events / Article

The legendary “Skroderdienām Silmači” is celebrating three remarkable anniversaries this year. 120 years since Rūdolfs Blaumanis wrote the play, 100 years since its premiere at the National Theater and 35 years since the first grand open-air performance of the play took place in Druviena. Probably, otherwise the anniversaries would be celebrated with a wide scope, which is not possible this summer. However, the organizers of the cultural life of Gulbene region have found their original solution – the event “Tailors’ Days under the Starry Sky”, during which the recording of the first Druviena performance is shown on the big screen in various places of the region.

The show took place in the summer of 1986 and was watched by more than 10,000 spectators from all over Latvia.

This summer’s series of events began on June 6 in Tirz and will continue until June 23. The recording of the show will be shown in 17 places in Gulbene region.

On Sunday evening, there is a cozy and romantic atmosphere at the Tirza Culture House. The evening is warm and pleasant, with a bonfire, and on the big screen, with two bushy lindens in the background, shows the first recording of Druviena’s open-air show wrapped in legends.

Some of the spectators sit right there in the meadow, but some of the recordings of the show are watched from their cars. Among the spectators is also the organizer of the event, the head of Druviena Culture House Valda Putene. She says that even before the time of Covid-19, it was planned to celebrate Druviena’s performance for 35 years with a very real show, which, of course, is not possible now.

“But, of course, these times and illness, also in the theater of change, changed these plans. You may also need to get a feel for the new director to understand what it means to perform in the countryside. And then the head of our cultural department suggested that the recording of the very first show from June 22, 1986, should still be shown. We will show the record in all parishes. Let’s hope that it will be as nice as tonight in Tirza, there will be no rain and we will be able to watch, ”says Valda Putene.

Valda Putene herself also took part in the show 35 years ago – she was among the singers of the Tirza Choir, as was the current director of the Tirza Culture House, Alda Alberte.

Alda Alberte explains: “We just“ fell ”on such happiness. The then chairman of the collective farm, Dainis Birnis, kindly invited our choir and youth dance group to take part in the show, because a whole complex had been built in Silmači – a stage and even Silmači house – and their self-employed people sang and danced there, but they asked if we could come to our aid was a former man from Tirzmal. And so we happily left.

There were 14,000 spectators in two days. At that time, free Latvia began, those were the indescribable feelings when everyone was so united. There were a lot of foreigners, they came to the grass, hugged, talked. It’s so unique, it won’t be any more. “

Druviena Silmači is a place where Blaumanis was inspired by his famous play and its characters, the plot is borrowed from Jānis Poruks. The idea to play the play in its authentic place of origin belongs to the Deputy Director of the National Theater Zigfrīds Kalniņš. In 1986, he performed a production created by Alfreds Jaunušana, in which such roles as Astrīda Kairiša, Ģirts Jakovļevs, Uldis Dumpis, Elza Radziņa, Velta Līne and many others play roles.

The creation of the open-air performance and behind the scenes in the film magazine “Art” was immortalized by director Viesturs Alksnītis, and Alfreds Jaunušans also shares his feelings about what was happening at that time: “The event itself, to which it is dedicated, gives such a special feeling . I want it to be as good as how well everything is built here, organized, how much people have been waiting for. That’s why I got so nervous that I even got a nervous fever. “

The head of the Literary Department of the National Theater, theater scientist Ieva Struka, calls the first open-air performance of the events of her life in Druviena the never-forgettable. She was 12 at the time, and she remembers the whole audience singing together, swaying, a sea of people and machines.

“The unity of the people – that feeling was in the air, and it is impossible to forget it. But for myself, of course, the show is more associated with such a huge love of theater, the specific actors in the specific staging. Because they were my first “Tailors’ Day in Silmači” in my life. And then for me, of course, they are connected with Lāsma Kugrēna Ieviņš, because I am Eve. But, of course, most of all with Astrid Kairish Antonija and Ģirts Jakovļevs Dūdars. And then in the meantime, in accordance with the best traditions of theater lovers, my friend Baiba and I got the courage and went behind the scenes and got many autographs of outstanding artists, ”says Ieva Struka. “And from that situation, I remember best Alfred the Young, who was sitting with a towel over his shoulders on a stool and his feet dipped in a bowl of cold water. It made a simply devastating impression on me as a child – to see a great director in such a mise-en-scène. But that didn’t stop him from signing the program. Because thank him! ”

The recording of the legendary Druviena performance will be shown on the big screen in various places of Gulbene region on the big screen until June 23, when the recording will be shown in Druviena itself.

The National Theater, on the other hand, offers to watch the recording of the 2016 open-air performance on its website, its director is Indra Roga.
