INSEE delivered home-work travel statistics for France. And emphasizes: “In the 19 municipalities with more than 150,000 inhabitants, 12% to 31% of home-work trips are made on foot or by bicycle. This difference is mainly explained by the use of the bicycle which concerns only 2% of the working population living in Saint-Étienne, Marseille and Nice but 17% in Grenoble and Strasbourg. In Grenoble, distances of less than 5 kilometers are frequent (67% of working people) and may explain this frequent recourse to cycling. “
Note that in France, between 2015 and 2020, the use of a bicycle to get to work increased by 2 points in the central municipalities, reaching 6% at the start of 2020.

The car remains the main mode of travel
The share of working people walking to work is less differentiated according to the big cities since it ranges between 10% in Nantes, Marseille, Strasbourg, Le Havre, Paris and 15% in Lyon. Grenoble is at 13.8%.
If Grenoble remains at the top for the use of the bicycle, let us recall all the same that the majority transport remains the car (39.3%) in front of the public transport (29%).
