The fire started Sunday near Lake Marathon, about 35 kilometers northeast of Athens, and reached the northern suburbs of the capital on Monday.
The height of the flames exceeded 25 meters in some places.
Several houses and businesses burned in the suburbs and settlements near the lake.
A dead man was found in one of the buildings that burned on Tuesday night.
As the wind died down, the firefighters hoped that the large fire could be contained.
The fire service said that firefighters are no longer fighting one long front, but are fighting many active local fires, especially around Marathon and Pendeli.
Greece has asked the European Union (EU) to help, and colleagues from France, the Czech Republic and other countries are expected to come to help Greek firefighters today.
Satellite images show that the fire affected an area of about 10,000 hectares, the National Observatory of Greece said on Monday.
Greece has experienced the hottest June and July in the history of meteorological observations this year, and Greece’s Civil Defense Minister, Vasilis Kikili, has warned that the dangerously hot weather will continue.
