A large fire broke out on Saturday morning near the city of Patras in the north of the Peloponnese. Five villages have been evacuated, a road closed and a bridge connecting the Peloponnese with the rest of Greece. Eight people were taken to hospitals with burns or respiratory problems.

Five helicopters and two specialized aircraft are also involved in the fight against the flames. Nearby hospitals have been warned that they may have to take in new victims, but the coast guard is ready to rescue people seeking refuge from the smoke of the water.

According to the Greek Civil Protection Agency, there are still high fire risks in the country and 58 forest fires have occurred during the day, but most of them have been quickly extinguished.

A severe heat wave continues in Greece, with 16 people in the Peloponnese hospitalized with severe heat-induced respiratory problems. In recent days, the air temperature in some places has risen to 43 degrees Celsius and on Sunday could reach as high as 45 degrees, moreover, even at night in many places, especially in large cities, it does not get colder than 30 degrees. Weather forecasters also do not promise colder weather on Monday and Tuesday.
