In September 2021 in the western German city of Idar-Oberstein the accident happened shocked German public opinion, confirming the great tension that had been created in society due to the Covid-19 pandemic and related restrictions.
The controversy began when 20-year-old cashier Alex asked the man to follow the rules and wear a mask. After a brief discussion, the man, identified by the German media as Mario N., left, but returned an hour and a half later.
This time he was wearing a mask, but when the man went to the cashier with a six-pack of beer cans, he took off the mask again and the discussion started again. During that time, Mario N. took out a revolver and shot the cashier.
On Tuesday the German court found Mario N. guilty of murder and illegal possession of a firearm, sentencing him to life imprisonment, reports the “Afp” agency.
In Germany, life imprisonment usually means that after 15 years the criminal can benefit from parole.
Prosecutors say Mario N. was angry about the Covid-19 restrictions, which he considered a violation of his rights, and blamed the cashier for demanding compliance with these rules.
“He couldn’t have access to the politicians responsible for enforcing the rules, so he killed the treasurer,” prosecutor Nicole Fron concludes.
Germany currently has far fewer Covid-19 restrictions than it did a year ago, although the requirement to wear a face mask has been maintained in some places, such as on public transport.
