Six years after the German diesel group’s so-called diesel scandal scandal came to light, a lawsuit was filed in Braunschweig on Thursday in which four former executives and engineers were tried for their involvement in the fraud.
Defendants have also been charged with commercial fraud and tax evasion.
In September 2015, Volkswagen caused a global scandal when the company admitted that up to 11 million of its cars in the world are equipped with certain types of diesel engines, which are equipped with falsified emission measurement software.
At the first hearing, the prosecutor’s office stated that not only senior engineers but also middle managers and former board members were aware of attempts to defraud the authorities in the United States, where the fraud was first discovered.
The defendants have agreed to hide the existence of false emission measurement falsification software from US environmental regulators, the prosecutor’s office explains.
Volkswagen has paid billions of euros in compensation to owners of the company’s cars around the world since the diesel scandal came to light.
It is expected that the examination of this case will be very long and a decision could be made only in the summer of 2023.
If convicted, they face up to at least six months to ten years in prison.
