A 75-year-old is delighted to be among the first people in Quebec who could receive the new vaccine against COVID-19 tomorrow evening in a CHSLD in Montreal.
” I am very happy […] Even if there is a small risk for me, as the first guinea pig, you have to find a more normal life where people can come together, ”argues Beverly Spanier.
The 75-year-old woman resides at CHSLD Maimonides, which is to receive two boxes of 975 doses of vaccine. In an email sent to relatives of the residents, the establishment indicates that the vaccination could take place as early as tomorrow evening, which a nurse on site confirmed by telephone.
“I was asked if I wanted to be the first,” says Mme Spanier. She believes that while it is normal to have fears about this new vaccine, it is necessary, she believes, wishing more than anything that the planet will start to live again.
The eldest had to give up meeting her family and friends at a restaurant, as she usually does at the holidays. She resigned herself to sending them virtual cards, confined to her room.
She has never contracted COVID-19, but has been hospitalized three times since the spring for other health problems.
“I was grateful to take an ambulance just to change the air and the scenery a bit, it’s horrible,” she laughs.
“I can’t wait to say that my father has passed through the pandemic,” blows Joyce Shanks, whose 81-year-old father will also be one of the first vaccinated. It must be said that the second wave has already caused 15 deaths at the CHSLD Maimonides.
The Deputy CEO of the CIUSSS du Center-Ouest-de-l’Île-de-Montréal, Francine Dupuis, says there is “a lot of enthusiasm” for vaccines.
With 387 beds at CHSLD Maimonides, she indicates that the CIUSSS will receive more doses than necessary for residents. Thus, employees can be vaccinated, as well as those from other CHSLDs. However, they will have to travel, as the vaccines must stay in one place.
“We must strictly adhere to the requirements of the Pfizer company,” says Mr.me Dupuis.
She assures us that doctors will be present to monitor symptoms after vaccination. Nurses have also been specifically trained to give it.
► In Quebec, the Saint-Antoine accommodation center is also ready for this historic moment, which could take place on Monday.
-The first vaccine could be given as early as tomorrow according to the CHSLD Maimonides, but a second dose of the vaccine must be injected 21 days after the first to be effective.
-Protection against COVID-19 begins one to two weeks after the end of the vaccination.
-Vaccinated people will be observed 15 minutes after the injection to watch for symptoms or allergic reactions.
