In front of Mahfud MD, Emil Salim Criticizes the Moving of the Indonesian Capital City

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Professor of the Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Indonesia, Prof. Emil Salim criticizes the wishes of the President’s government Joko Widodo (Jokowi) moved the nation’s capital city (IKN) from Jakarta to East Kalimantan. The criticism was conveyed by Emil when he met the invitation of the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud MD virtually on Thursday (26/8/2021) night.

Also attending the meeting were Former Mining and Energy Minister Kuntoro Mangkusubroto, Founder of the National Mandate Party (PAN) Abdillah Toha, INDEF senior economist Faisal Basri, and former KPK Deputy Chairman Laode M. Syarief.

“I empathize with the Minister of Finance who is dizzy, but many of our friends in the (ministry) department do not understand that spending is limited so that various expenditures, such as buying weapons, the state capital and so on, run as if the finances ( there is a lot of budget available, even though it is not. This will complicate the management of state finances,” said Emil as quoted from a press release from the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal and Security Affairs received by CNBC Indonesia today.

Abdillah Toha criticized various government policies that were deemed unpro-people.

“In this second period, there are many things that become big question marks. I want to give one example, the KPK. We are confused that people who have extraordinary achievements at the KPK are still dismissed, and there is no follow-up from the President,” he said.

Kuntoro Mangkusubroto gave input on handling the pandemic. According to him, the results achieved in handling the pandemic so far have been quite good, but they have not been carried out in a systematic manner through the correct organizational approach.

“An organized way of working, which was prepared by predecessors, was abandoned, in the name of speed. It’s good, but the governance is not. When this pandemic is at its peak, there is no one permanent organization to deal with, even though the problem is getting more serious. The accumulation of information becomes knowledge, nothing will happen if there is no organization,” said Kuntoro.

Faisal Basri highlighted several legal issues in the economic field. According to him, the economy will survive if law enforcement is good.

“I was surprised by, for example, that the obligation to build plantations for refined sugar was waived, so we heard complaints from the food and beverage industry, they were very disturbed. In East Java, there are no factories that produce refined sugar, we are waiting for the destruction of the national sugar factory,” said Faisal.

Laode M. Syarief assesses that there is a tendency for public space to become narrower and it is difficult to convey aspirations to the government.

“Friends who should be in the government, access is very limited. Only Professor Mahfud often communicates with the public, the others never open communication. In the past, we could stay in touch and say if we felt uncomfortable about a policy,” said Laode.

Everyone present in this dialogue expressed their views and then Mahfud responded one by one at the end of the event.

“What has been conveyed, whether it’s criticism, complaints, or input, is generally the same, and most of it is already known to the government. The problem now is that we have to find a road map to unravel and fix all these problems, and for that the contribution from the gentlemen is very important. needed,” said Mahfud while thanking the leaders for their willingness to attend and share.
