In four Brabant municipalities, no supermarket is open on New Year’s Eve: here you shop on January 1 | Brabant

The number of supermarkets opening on January 1 hasn’t increased for the first time in years. Across the Netherlands, an average of 40% of supermarkets are open on New Year’s Eve, reports LocalFocus. It was 46 percent last year.

In Brabant, there are only four municipalities where no branches are open on 1 January: Altena, Alphen-Chaam, Heeze-Leende and Waalre. Only one supermarket is open in the municipality of Den Bosch.

The fact that New Year’s Eve falls on a Sunday in 2023 could be the reason for the small drop in the number of open shops, according to Openingstijden.nl.

Big cities

In almost all major cities in Brabant, more than half of the supermarkets are open. In Eindhoven, for example, 34 of the 53 supermarkets are open and the inhabitants of Breda can do their shopping in 26 shops (68%). In Tilburg, 57% of supermarkets are open.
