The long-delayed launch of Finland’s Olkiluoto-3 nuclear reactor is finally a fact, the plant’s operator said.
The EPR reactor, which was built by the French consortium Areva-Siemens on the southwest coast of Finland, was put into operation in December, but with a 12-year delay.
Following the start of regular energy production, which is now expected in July 2022, it will supply about 14% of Finland’s energy.
The plant must become the most powerful reactor in Europe. Olkiluoto-3 will work with two other existing reactors on the west coast of Finland.
The EPR reactor, developed by France, is one of the first nuclear power plants in Europe since the 1986 Chernobyl disaster.
However, the construction of EPR-type rectors in Finland, France and the United Kingdom has been affected by delays and cost overruns.
