In February Sheinbaum will present secondary laws for Pemex and CFE

After signing the decree last month through which the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) and Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) return to being public companies of the State, President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that in February the secondary laws in this subject.

Although he considered that there was progress on this route during the six-year term of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, he said that there were adjustments that were not made due to the failure to achieve the necessary constitutional reform.

“An important part that could not be done in the previous six-year term, because the Constitution could not be changed, (was that) being a productive company of the State, Pemex ceased to be in fact a company of the people of Mexico, and had the characteristics or functioned like any private company, despite the fact that the Ministry of Finance or the government took away its rights as if it were a public company because it had a special regime,” he said this Monday in his morning press conference.

In October, the Congress of the Union endorsed the modification to articles 25, 27 and 28 of the Constitution, which restored their character as public companies and returned to the Mexican State control of its strategic resources that were modified with the energy reform in the government of Enrique Peña Nieto.

“Now that it is returning to being a public company, the secondary laws are coming, which are going to be presented in February, they are being worked on,” said Sheinbaum Pardo in his morning conference at the National Palace.

He pointed out that, with the energy reform, Pemex became inefficient, so now efforts are being made to enable it to grow and increase its efficiency, as well as promote the ecological restoration of many territories.

Meanwhile, when asked about the costs of electricity in high temperature seasons, she explained that the public company subsidizes electricity rates by around 40 billion pesos.

He stressed that his government is reviewing different options to continue supporting those who have the least, but clarified that “it would be very easy to say, we are going to subsidize, but the problem is seeing where the subsidy comes from, that is why we have to work together.”

He stressed that, given the high temperatures that are recorded every year, mainly in the north and southeast of the country, air conditioning is a necessity and not a privilege.
