‘In extremis’, the Eagles rescue a valuable 1-1 draw against Necaxa

With a last-gasp goal from Henry Martín, América rescued a valuable 1-1 draw against Necaxa, thus going three games without defeat, yesterday in a match corresponding to matchday nine of the Apertura 2024 tournament of the Liga Mx, played at the Victoria stadium, in Aguascalientes.

The Rayos made the most of their home advantage in the first minutes of the match with shots from José Paradela, Diber Cambindo and Agustín Palavecino, but none of them managed to invade the opposing goal. América, which was unable to generate any danger, barely managed to respond with a shot from Richard Sánchez from outside the area, but it could not breach Luis Unsain’s goal either.

It was not until the 38th minute when the Aguascalientes team, led by Eduardo Fentanes, surprised América, after Emilio Lara sent a back pass from the right, which Cambindo let pass so that Palavecino connected with the ball with a powerful shot and pierced the goal protected by Luis Ángel Malagón, putting the score at 1-0 to put his team ahead before halftime.

In the second half of the match, the Azulcrema coach André Jardine made changes to his lineup in an attempt to even the score, so he sent Rodrigo Aguirre and Álvaro Fidalgo onto the field to replace Diego Valdés and Jonathan dos Santos.

The changes gave the Eagles greater offensive power, as they began to haunt the rival goal with shots from Brian Rodríguez, Ramón Juárez, Aguirre and Fidalgo, but none of them managed to cross the goal line.

In the 63rd minute, it seemed that the visitors would manage to balance the score, after referee Oscar Mejia called a penalty for a handball in the area, but after reviewing the play in the VAR, he decided not to apply the punishment.

In the final stretch of the match, América went all out on the attack, while the Necaxa team was unable to score a goal that would extend their lead, and when it seemed that they would take the win, the captain of the Azulcrema team, Henry Martín, appeared in the area to shoot from very close to the goal and with a right-footed shot he tied the game at 90+4.

With this result, the Rayos reached 12 points and are placed in 11th place in the general classification. The Coapa team, on the other hand, remained in tenth place, with 13 points.

Meanwhile, Monterrey provisionally took the lead in the standings despite tying Mazatlán 0-0 in a match held at the BBVA stadium.

After the draw, Rayados accumulated 20 points to occupy the first step of the table. In turn, the Cañoneros remained in 14th place, with seven units.

At the Nou Camp stadium, León achieved its first victory in the tournament by beating Atlético de San Luis 1-0. The goal for the emerald team, led by Eduardo Berizzo, occurred in the 62nd minute, when Jhonder Cádiz received a through ball into the area from Iván Moreno who defined with his left foot to beat the visiting goalkeeper Andrés Sánchez.

In this way, the La Fiera team added seven points and rose to 15th place in the table; while the Potosí squad, led by Domenec Torrent, remained in sixth position, with 14 points.
