At present, many women decide to become mothers at a biologically advanced age for multiple causes that characterize today’s women: work, travel, not having a stable partner.
Coincidentally, it is from the age of 35 when the quality and quantity of oocytes begins to decrease, making it difficult to conceive a child. However, medical and scientific advances have allowed many women to achieve this dream in recent years thanks to the practice of egg donation.
In Mar del Plata, one out of every three fertility procedures is performed with donated eggs and 96% of the women who donate perform it for a charitable purpose.
According to a study carried out by the Center for Reproduction and Human Genetics (Crecer) in the last month, data was revealed about the interest that motivates a woman to donate eggs to help other women who cannot achieve pregnancy with their own eggs.
Egg donation is a highly complex assisted reproduction treatment, in which gametes (eggs) provided by a donor woman are used.
These eggs are joined to the sperm of the recipient partner or bank semen to obtain embryos and these are transferred to the recipient woman who will carry out the gestation. It should be noted that being a donor does not generate any relationship of filiation, it is not the mother of the baby, but the one who contributes a cell.
Egg donation is regulated by the National Law on Assisted Human Fertilization, (Law 26,862), where it is established that it will never be lucrative and / or commercial.
Donors undergo an exhaustive medical evaluation: clinical, gynecological, genetic and psychological, for which they have free access to comprehensive knowledge of their health status. Once these studies are carried out with the expected results, the next stage is advanced.
In order to make the donation, it is necessary to undergo ovarian stimulation treatment and after approximately 10 days to an outpatient intervention. Although the main motivation is solidarity, they receive financial retribution for the time invested.
The process
In reference to the process a donor must go through, 57% of those surveyed indicated that they would not change anything. The practice as detailed is not painful.
Social networks are the means par excellence by which the egg donation issue is made known and to summon interested parties, 61% of the respondents learned about it through an advertisement on Facebook or Instagram, while 35% knew the subject by close relationship with a woman who cannot get pregnant.
65% of donors have completed tertiary or university studies (between graduates and advanced students) while 35% have completed secondary school. Furthermore, 75% currently work.
The majority of donor women, 36% have a family made up of a partner and children, 31% have a family made up of parents and siblings, 14% make up their family with children, 7% have a partner and do not have children and 2% recognized themselves as a single patient, 2% have a family made up of parents, siblings and a child, and the rest reserved this information.
Dr. Débora Petrone, director of the Crecer Egg Donation Department, pointed out that “it is very exciting to see the commitment with which donors carry out this action with an altruistic purpose and the gratitude of the women who receive this egg in order to achieve a pregnancy and achieve your dream. Donating eggs is an act of love, anonymous and supportive ”.
Currently, the institution receives more than 250 monthly consultations from women who request information on egg donation.
