Following a protest against vaccination certificates and “forced vaccination” at the Cypriot presidential palace on Sunday, which was attended by about 5,000 people, some 2,500 protesters went to the Sigma TV editorial, police said.
The crowd began to demolish and burn the cars parked at the editorial office and smash the windows of the building. Clutter workers managed to break into the ground floor lobby, where they began to break furniture.
After the police intervention, the riots were suppressed, although there are no reports of detainees.
None of the editorial staff was attacked.
The Cypriot president has said violent protests are an attack on democracy and that the government will “not resist threats and extortion”.
The President added that the authorities would take the violence against the perpetrators with all severity.
Sigma TV has ruthlessly cracked down on vaccination opponents and has been attacked in the past during protests against quarantine measures.
In Cyprus, vaccination certificates were introduced this week, allowing only vaccinated people to enter supermarkets, restaurants and other public places.
At the same time, vaccination became available to adolescents at least 16 years of age.
In Cyprus, more than 90,000 infections and 384 deaths due to Covid-19 have been reported since the beginning of the pandemic.
