In Cyprus, they intend to introduce “smart” traffic lights to combat traffic jams | Abroad

The Cyprus Ministry of Transport is developing two projects that will help solve the problem of traffic jams in the country, according to local publications. The first initiative is to transfer employees of hospitals, government agencies, banks and private companies from personal cars to buses in the parking lot of the GSP stadium in Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus.

The second is to install 126 “smart” traffic lights in Nicosia and Limassol, which will regulate the traffic flow during peak hours. 75 instruments will be installed in Nicosia and 51 in Limassol. The Ministry of Transport has recognized the pilot project for the use of “smart” traffic lights at the Agios Fylakseos roundabout in Limassol, which started in 2021, as successful. According to statistics, the waiting time at the entrance to the intersection has decreased by up to 50%.

It is expected that 126 “smart” traffic lights in Cyprus will start working by the end of 2025. The main functions of such devices will be: regulation of the duration of the permissive signal depending on the traffic intensity; coordination of the work of conventional traffic lights that are located near intersections with “smart” traffic lights; giving priority to buses, ambulances, fire and police vehicles; the use of various traffic programs (for example, restricting access to certain areas of cities or at certain times of the day).
