“We are seeing nightlife problems in some parts of Copenhagen, especially in the center, becoming more uncontrollable – there is more noise on the streets, more drunk people and completely unacceptable cases of violence,” said Social Democrat Frank Jensen in a statement.
The proposals submitted to the Ministry of Justice stipulate that the sale of alcohol in some particularly popular areas of the population will be banned from 8 pm.
The ban will apply to shops, but not to bars and restaurants.
The mayor wants similar rules in other large cities, partially renewing the rules that existed until 2005, which provided that from 20 to 6 o’clock it is prohibited to sell beverages with an alcohol content exceeding 2.8%.
The power to impose fines for the public nuisance that the police currently have should be given to representatives of the municipal security services, Jensen suggested.
In neighboring countries in the region, Sweden, Norway and Finland, alcohol is sold in state monopoly stores and their opening hours are limited. There are currently no such restrictions in Denmark.
