This March 8 and in commemoration of International Women’s Day, an activity was carried out at the National Palace of Culture to recognize the work and effort of some women who have stood out from their public and private positions. And in a formal ceremony the president, Bernardo Arévalo, awarded the “Order of Labor Excellence Medal” to Virginia Laparra.
Laparra is the former head of the Special Prosecutor’s Office against Impunity (FECI) in Quetzaltenango, the award is given to her for being “an example of strength, work, resistance, and her tireless fight for a better country.”
In his message he highlighted that work excellence is being competent in a job and trying to improve yourself day by day.” This requires effort and dedication, but it brings with it great joy and great satisfaction. We all seek to be useful to society and we have achieved that goal when what we do helps so that as a society we advance, prosper and develop,” he highlighted.
For her part, in the intervention of Vice President Karin Herra, Laparra highlighted that she raised her voice for those who have not been able to do so. She also thanked the Guatemalan population for their incessant struggle to ensure justice was done. “No woman should be persecuted for doing the right thing,” stressed the vice president.
WHAT WAS LAPARRA ACCUSED OF?
A court sentenced Laparra to 4 years in prison, commutable at a rate of Q10 per day, for the crime of continuous abuse of authority.
She was prosecuted after former judge Lesther Castellanos denounced her, because when Laparra supposedly took office she repeatedly denounced him for allegedly leaking confidential information.
In January, the lawyer and former prosecutor Against Impunity regained her freedom after being granted house arrest.
