The Columérins now have four hookers in their workforce. A situation that the staff must manage as well as possible even if injuries or absences have so far made their task easier.
Abundance of goods is not harmful as we usually say. In Colomiers, the hooker position has been very well filled since the start of the season. If the columérin staff had started his season with the triplet Lescure-Chambord-Saaidia, the injury of Ronan Chambord in full summer preparation forced the columérins leaders to take a medical joker: in this case the New Zealander Hikawera Elliot, since extended until the end of the season.
Today, when it comes to the second part of the championship, the four hookers are (almost) on the bridge. The competition promises to be tough even if a hierarchy seems to emerge and Colomiers’ coaches will have to manage this wealth as well as possible as hooker. In the meantime, we’ll take you around the owner.
> Hikawera Elliot (35 years old, 1m86, 114 kg), 9 matches, 4 tries
Arrived as a medical joker after two seasons in Nevers, the New Zealander who has been All Black four times quickly won unanimous support. “He is a leader, an exemplary player through his work and his state of mind,” said Fabien Berneau, the Colomiers forwards coach. Strong in the one-on-one, excellent ball in hand, Elliot is also a leader in scrum. Barely arrived, quickly integrated, it now seems essential in the pack of the dove.
> Thomas Larrieu (29 years old, 1m84, 112 kg), 13 matches
It doesn’t make noise, but it’s devilishly efficient. Recruited this summer at Valence-Romans, Larrieu is a player who was able to respond quickly. Excellent pitcher, he has integrated the columérine touch very well and in his movements, he always offers himself at the right time and in the right place in the circulation of the columérin game. A good pick for summer recruiting.
> Youssef Saaidia (25 years old, 1m77, 94 kg), 7 matches, 1 try
Here he is back to competition after knee surgery last season in January 2020. “He is making a convincing comeback,” said Fabien Berneau about this explosive player, excellent tackler and who has great qualities of speed. “He still has to improve the quality of his throws and become a little more leader in scrum. But he is still young and maturity will come with time,” said his coach.
> Ronan Chambord (26 years old, 1m77, 105 kg), no match
A shoulder injury that occurred in the middle of summer preparation followed by an operation and that’s how it messes you up a season. Ronan Chambord must also resolve at the moment a small calf problem that occurred during re-athleticism, which further delays his return to competition. “He is going through difficult times and I put myself in his place, it should not be easy, especially since he was part of our trio of hookers at the start of the exercise,” notes Fabien Berneau.
Arrived as Youssef Saaidia’s medical joker at the end of 2019, extended last summer after a season cut short by the Covid crisis, he has not yet been able to fully display his abilities. Serious boy who displays a good state of mind, Ronan Chambord who has not played a game this season has necessarily fallen behind his teammates. And getting back in the wagon once the train has started is never easy
