Lhe two countries with the largest GDP in the world, the United States and China, saw their economic freedoms drastically curtailed last year. This is one of the discoveries of theIndex of Economic Freedom 2022, published by the Heritage Foundation every year since 1995. The index reports the degree of economic freedom by country, which makes it a kind of “scale of capitalism”.
The study shows that the United States fell to the 25e place in the ranking, its lowest position in 28 years. This fall is linked to high public spending, which has led to both an explosion in deficits and in the debt burden.
