Nearly 60,000 Covid-19-related deaths have been recorded in China in the month since quarantine restrictions were eased in early December, the Medical Administration Office of the National Health Commission announced on Saturday.
Between December 8 and January 12, 59,938 deaths related to Covid-19 were registered, the head of the office, Jiao Yahui, said.
The total number of victims of the virus could be higher, as these data only refer to deaths registered in medical facilities.
In 5,503 of the registered cases, death was caused by lung failure that occurred as a result of infection, while in 54,435 cases, the cause of death was complications caused by the virus in patients with other diseases.
