In children, ticks bite the head and neck more often

What is Lyme Disease?

More than 1 million people are bitten by a tick every year. One in five ticks is infected with the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi, which transmits Lyme disease. About 27,000 people a year develop the disease. 1000 to 2500 of them have long-term complaints.

If you have Lyme disease, you can suffer from a spot or circle around the site of the tick bite, but you can also get a fever and possibly muscle and joint pain. In the long term you sometimes get other skin complaints, nerve complaints, joint complaints or heart complaints. Lyme disease can be treated with antibiotics.
