in case of new measures, “we will not have been prepared for anything”

INTERVIEW

Unexpectedly, Jean Castex’s speech was not unanimous, especially on the side of the teachers’ unions. While the executive and health authorities continue to fear an upsurge in the coronavirus epidemic, the Prime Minister announced on Friday evening the strengthening of several restrictive measures to avoid a third confinement, but none concerning the school. Invited on Saturday from Europe 1, Jean-Rémi Girard, president of the National Union of High Schools and Colleges (SNALC), regrets a lack of anticipation of which he fears the consequences.

“We will continue with the measures we had. The problem is that we do not know until when”, reacts Jean-Rémi Girard, who adds: “What is terrible is this state of uncertainty in which we put the staff of National Education “.

“If ever what is being put in place does not work, and we take new measures, they will happen to us overnight, and we will not have been prepared for anything”, still regrets guest from Europe 1. “If we were to close schools, we are no more prepared for distance education today than we were last March”. And to conclude, worried: “It will be the same mess”.

“Since returning from vacation, the numbers have increased”

Another cause for concern for the staff of the National Education, the increase in contamination in schools. “Since the return of the Christmas holidays, the figures have increased, and it is not just a holiday effect”, assures Jean-Rémi Girard. “They’ve increased more this week than just coming back from Christmas vacation.”

“It’s still a concern”, continues the president of SNALC, “we are not quite at the level of the figures for November, but we are starting to be close”. And Jean-Rémi Girard regrets the lack of studies devoted to contamination in schools. “If the school plays a role in the contamination, it will be necessary that one day we say it or that we know it”, he claims. “We do everything a bit blindly,” he annoys.
